Because it is an alloy primarily made of copper and zinc, the copper reacts naturally with oxygen, moisture, and the pH levels in your sweat. Over time, this oxidation causes the metal to develop a darker, dull patina or leave a harmless green tint on your skin.

How to Prevent & Manage Tarnish

Wear it often: The natural oils from your skin can actually help coat the brass and prevent it from oxidizing quickly.

Keep it dry: Remove your brass jewelry before showering, swimming, or applying lotions and perfumes.

Proper storage: Store your pieces in a dry, airtight place (like a velvet-lined jewelry box or a small plastic zip-lock bag) to minimize air exposure.

Protective coating: You can brush a thin layer of jewelry-safe wax or clear lacquer onto the surface to act as a barrier against air and moisture.

How to Restore the Shine

Unlike cheap plated jewelry, solid brass can be polished back to its original brilliant gold-like shine.

Polishing Cloths: Use a specialized polishing cloth (such as a Sunshine Polishing Cloth) to easily buff away tarnish.

DIY Paste: Mix 1 teaspoon of salt with 1/2 cup of white vinegar, and stir in enough flour to make a paste. Rub it onto the jewelry, leave for 10 minutes, then rinse and dry thoroughly.

Commercial Cleaners: Gently scrub stubborn tarnish using a soft toothbrush and a mild brass polish like Bar Keepers Friend.
